David Cameron has Announced his Resignation

David Cameron has just announced that he will be resigning as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister before the Conservative Party conference in October. His replacement as party leader will be elected by Conservative Party MPs and party members. Whoever wins will become the next Prime Minister.

I suspect that this announcement together with the vote to leave the European Union will cause wild fluctuations in the next general election polls so I will be wary of any polls published before the leadership election. (Not least because they were wrong in Election 2015 and again in the European Union referendum.)
